Join Featured Florida Poet Larry Jaffe from Tampa Bay, followed by a community open mic.
Larry Jaffe (Lifetime New Generation Beat Poet Laureate) from Tampa Bay is the featured poet. He will share at 3 PM, followed by a brief book signing opportunity, and then a community open mic featuring the first ten who sign up.
If you would like to share a poem, please see the facilitator at 2:30 PM to get your name on the list on the day of the event. There is space on the list for ten poets at five minutes each. At 3:30 PM, the readers will be called to the podium in the order their names appear on the sign-up sheet.
LARRY JAFFE
For his entire professional career, Larry Jaffe has been using his art to promote human rights. He was Poet-In-Residence at the Autry Museum, a featured poet in Chrysler’s Spirit in the Words poetry program, co-founder of Poets for Peace, helped spearhead the United Nations Dialogue among Civilizations through Poetry project, former Poet Laureate Youth for Human Rights, Florida Beat Poet Laureate, Pushcart Nominee, and the recipient of the Saint Hill Art Festival’s Lifetime of Creativity Award, along with other awards. He was recently awarded the Lifetime New Generation Beat Poet Laureate. Poet in Residence Jack Kerouac House in St. Pete. Jaffe recently started handing out poems to strangers as part of his The World Needs More Poetry Project. He is the Editor-In-Chief of BeatLife Magazine and Poetix Poetry News. He has six books of poetry: Unprotected Poetry, Anguish of the Blacksmith’s Forge, One Child Sold, In Plain View, 30 Aught 4, Sirens and Man without Borders.
Share your polished poems or bust out fresh ink from your notebook during St. Augustine’s longest-running open mic poetry event. Invite a friend or two or three. Ancient City Poets has always been open to the public and there is no charge at the door to get your name on the list.
This gathering will be the sixth in an eight-part series of monthly events celebrating creative writing and reciting presented by Ancient City Poets, the St. Augustine PoetFest, and the St. Johns Cultural Council. This series is coordinated by Chris Bodor, in recognition of his role as the Beat Poet Laureate for the State of Florida. National Beat Poetry Foundation’s Beat Poet Laureates are chosen by an anonymous group of people worldwide who contact NBPF through email, messenger, and other social media outlets to give recommendations as to who they feel will best represent the new generation of Beat Poets in a respectful matter. Past and present Beat Laureates also lend their recommendations as well.

Ancient City Poets is the local chapter of the Florida State Poets Association (FSPA). These gatherings qualify as the monthly chapter meeting. The monthly readings are open to all. You do not have to be a member to share at the podium. Ancient City Poets is a community of poets and poetry lovers who have gathered in the Nation’s Oldest City, on the last Sunday of the month, since August 2009.
