St. Johns County’s very own Ann Browning Masters (Menorcan Poet Laureate) will be in the spotlight in October. The featured poet will share at 3 PM, followed by a brief book signing opportunity, and then a community open mic featuring the first ten who sign up.
If you would like to share a poem, please see the facilitator at 2:30 PM to get your name on the list on the day of the event. There is space on the list for ten poets at five minutes each. At 3:30 PM, the readers will be called to the podium in the order their names appear on the sign-up sheet.
BIO
Ann Browning Masters’ writing about Menorcans and Floridanos has been presented at the Florida Folk Festival and recorded for the Florida State Historical Archives. Her book Floridanos, Menorcans, Cattle-Whip Crackers: Poetry of St. Augustine was published by The Florida Historical Society Press. She is now at work writing a second book, Menorcans: A Long View. In 2023 the Menorcan Cultural Society appointed her St. Augustine’s Menorcan Poet Laureate, and she was also recognized by the First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Voces de Hispanos oral history project as a Hispanic-American person of note.
Share your polished poems or bust out fresh ink from your notebook during St. Augustine’s longest-running open mic poetry event. Invite a friend or two or three. Ancient City Poets has always been open to the public and there is no charge at the door to get your name on the list.
This gathering will be the seventh in an eight-part series of monthly events celebrating creative writing and reciting presented by Ancient City Poets, the St. Augustine PoetFest, and the St. Johns Cultural Council. This series is coordinated by Chris Bodor, in recognition of his role as the Beat Poet Laureate for the State of Florida. National Beat Poetry Foundation’s Beat Poet Laureates are chosen by an anonymous group of people worldwide who contact NBPF through email, messenger, and other social media outlets to give recommendations as to who they feel will best represent the new generation of Beat Poets in a respectful matter. Past and present Beat Laureates also lend their recommendations as well.
