Let’s gather at the Waterworks and celebrate seventeen years of monthly Ancient City Poets open mic happenings.
Poets and poetry fans gather on August 30th at The Waterworks (184 San Marco Avenue, across from the Main Branch of the St. Johns County Library). Poets of all skill levels are given an opportunity to share their poems with a loving and supportive audience.
In April of 2009, the St. Johns Cultural Council wanted to recognize National Poetry Month in Northeast Florida, so they went through their database and rounded up all the poets, writers, and authors for an open mic. Chris Bodor had recently moved to St. Augustine from New York, where he was involved with an open mic event in New York City. With the success of the 2009 local observation of National Poetry Month, Bodor set up a podium, a microphone, and speakers at a coffee shop in August of that year, and returned on the last Sunday of every month. To this day, the signup sheet is filled with names. Poetry friends, family, and fans show up to cheer for the people at the podium.
Give them two or three of your polished poems or share fresh ink from your notebook. Invite a friend or two or three to cheer you on.
A sign-up sheet will be available at 2:30 and the open mic will start at 3:00 PM. Readers will be called to the podium in the order their names appear on the list. The mic will be turned off at 4:30 to allow the last 30 minutes for a meet and greet and networking.
Let your poetic words flow through the Waterworks and through the streets of St. Augustine.

HELP SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE ANCIENT CITY POETS
Ancient City Poets is the local chapter of the Florida State Poets Association (FSPA). These gatherings qualify as the monthly chapter meeting. The monthly readings are open to all. You do not have to be a member to share at the podium. Ancient City Poets is a community of poets and poetry lovers who have gathered in the Nation’s Oldest City, on the last Sunday of the month, since August 2009.

Membership: When you become a member of FSPA, you are also a member of your local group AND the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. Annual membership dues are $35 (and $20 for students).
